Recording Studio in Fort Collins, Colorado

I record vocals, guitars, bass, synthesizers, keys, and solo instruments at The Cat Mansion in Fort Collins. Some clients track a whole song here. Most come in for the parts a home setup can't get: a lead vocal, a guitar pass, an overdub that needs a real microphone and a treated room. I'm Jeff Burchett. I've recorded artists since 2015.

A Focused Room, Not a Live Room

This room is built for controlled sources. It's treated and tuned by Music City Acoustics for critical listening, so it's dry and accurate. Close-mic work comes out clean. The microphone hears the source, not the room.

Music studio with keyboard, synthesizer, mixer, computer monitor, and various audio equipment, with soundproofing panels and plants on the walls.

You can't cut a loud band live off the floor in here, and I'll say so when that's what someone needs. What the room does well is a vocal that has to sit forward, a bass or guitar captured clean, a synth committed to audio, an overdub that has to match a record already in progress.

Hear the Microphones

Listen before you book. I've recorded a source through several of my microphones and posted the results with no processing on them, so you can hear the room and the mics with nothing in the way.

The mic locker here includes the Royer R-121, a Neumann TLM 103, a Soyuz 1973, an AKG C214, and a Shure SM7B, among others. Most studios give you a gear list and ask you to trust it. But you can listen to samples of unprocessed recordings made at The Cat Mansion on the services page.

What the Room Records Well

The room handles controlled sources well. Vocals sit forward. Guitars, bass, synths, piano and keys, and solo instruments all track clean. It's a good room for overdubs and for building a song part by part.

It's also set up for re-amping. Send me a direct recording you made somewhere else, a guitar, a bass, a synth, a vocal, and I'll run it back out through an amp and effects and record it again in the room. That gets you sounds a plugin won't. Clean direct signals re-amp best, and I can do this for you even if you never come in.

Use the Gear

The gear here is part of the session, instruments included. There's a room full of synthesizers, drum machines, and samplers, from a UDO Super 6 and an Access Virus to a vintage Akai S5000. There are good guitars and basses, a Gibson Les Paul, a PRS, several Fenders, and amps to play them through. If your song is missing a part and the right instrument is sitting here, use it.

How Booking Works

The Cat Mansion is a private studio, and sessions are by appointment. Book ahead so the room is set up for what you're tracking when you arrive. A few house rules keep the room working and the recordings clean, and they're worth a look before you book. See studio policies
